Rhinoplasty Recovery: Tips for Minimizing Bruising and Swelling
Bruising and swelling are a normal part of rhinoplasty recovery. They are dependent on several factors related to both the surgical technique and the patient. Techniques that increase bruising and swelling include whether or not the nasal bones were broken (osteotomies), the extent of soft tissue dissection/elevation from the bony-cartilaginous framework, and whether the surgery was performed open or closed. Patient factors include age, skin thickness, nutrition, bleeding... more
Minimizing Bruising After Rhinoplasty
For two weeks prior to your rhinoplasty surgery, it is important to avoid certain medications and supplements which can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising. In my practice, we give each patient a list of these products at the preoperative visit, which we schedule 2-3 weeks prior to the surgical date. After surgery, we advise you to place crushed ice in a glove and apply this (20 minutes every hour for 48-72 hrs) to the eyes and forehead, where bruising and swelling may occur.... more

Surgery recovery products make false promises about bruising
It's discouraging to see so many products being recommended that are woefully lacking in any scientific support: arnica montana has not been shown in well designed studies to affect bruising. "vitamin k oxide" has not been shown in well designed studies to reduce bruising and the claim that it alters heme metabolism or hemosiderin degradation is also not supported (FYI: vitamin k is a coenzyme in the synthesis of certain clotting factors in the liver, not in the skin.) bromelain,... more

How to minimize bruising after rhinoplasty
Bruising is staining of the undersurface of the skin with blood that has leaked from the vessels. Unfortunately eyelid skin is the thinnest skin on the human body and can really show the staining underneath very easily (like a window). In rhinoplasty, the blood that leaks from the break or cut in the nasal bones or from dissection during nasal shaping in the upper third of the nose, will likely show itself on eyelid skin. Now that we have an understanding of the cause(s), here is what may help... more
Bruising from rhinoplasty or nose job
Bruising can occur from rhinoplasty or a nose job under and around the eyes. This is especially true if the nasal bones are fractured. However, some patients may not bruise at all. Most bruising will resolve within 3-7 days if present. Arnica tablets before and after surgery might help as do cold compresses post operatively. Warm compresses will help 3-4 days after surgery. see video

How Do I Minimize Bruising from a Rhinoplasty?
The two best option is to diminish bruising after rhinoplasty are to begin taking Arnica Montana (tablets) 3 days prior to surgery and 7 days postop as well as Bromelein (pineapple extract pill form) for 1 week after surgery. In my practice I also routinely use fibrin glue in the osteotomy sites, which is a common anti-bleeding option availabe in the operating room. It tends to seal blood vessels at the site of controlled fracturing of the nose and severely limits bruising... more

For prevention - avoid Vitamin E, fish oils, and aspirin (an absolute must to not take) for the ten days prior to surgery, and for the three days prior avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatories. Rhinoplasty and Bruising
Bruising after a rhinoplasty is multifactorial. The most common cause is the part of the procedure where your nasal bones are narrowed, infractured or broken to enhance the overall nasal balance. Other causes would include elevating the soft tissues of the nose in order to modify the underlying nasal framwork. A patient's individual bruisability also contributes to the level of bruising. Lastly, a surgeon's careful and meticulous handling of the nasal anatomy can... more
How to Minimize Bruising after Rhinoplasty
The most important things to avoid 2 weeks before rhinoplasty are blood thinners such as Aspirin, Motrin and any other non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Also, vitamin E, Fish Oil and many herbal supplements are blood thinners. The other factor is if osteotomies (cuts in the nasal bones) are necessary for your surgery. If they are not done, there is significantly less swelling and bruising. I would not avoid osteotomies if narrowing the nose is desirable, but... more

How To Minimize Bruising After Rhinoplasty
We put our patients on arnica or bromelain. We also recommend that patients stop taking all vitamins and herbal supplements, as well as NSAIDs. Additionally, we tell our patients not to have fish for 2 weeks prior to surgery. All of these simple changes will help minimize bruising after a rhinoplasty.
Help bruising
We tell patients at our office to use arnica gel and tablets as directed one week before surgery. Usually patients do not get much bruising. If they do It it usually resolves in a week or so. Bruising also depends on how you heal as well. Also it is important to avoid greens and certain vitamins and supplements before surgery. Hope this helps.

Hello, Bruising and swelling after surgery are a normal part of rhinoplasty. Because the nose is a midline structure, it will take longer to decongest and lose its swelling after surgery. In my rhinoplasty practice I ask patients to make sure that they take care of several things to ensure the quickest recovery possible: 1. I ask that their blood pressure be under normal control 2. I ask them to refrain from alcohol usage for some time after surgery 3. I ask that... more
