Although most people think of changing the shape of the nose for cosmetic reasons when they think of nose surgery, there are other reasons to have an operation of your nose. Nasal turbinate surgery is a procedure to reduce the size of the turbinates, tiny structures within your nose. This portion of your nasal structure serves to clean the air as it moves through your nasal passages.
The turbinates are constantly fluctuating in size; nasal congestion is caused by enlarged turbinates resulting from allergies or illness. Enlarged turbinates can obstruct the airways, resulting in difficulty breathing, snoring, or sleep apnea. In some people, the turbinates are naturally large, while others have large turbinates due to a medical condition. Turbinate surgery reduces their size, while leaving enough of the structure in place to preserve their function.
This surgical procedure requires local anesthesia and incisions inside each nostril. In most cases, the surgeon does not need to make any external incisions in the skin of the nose. The turbinates, of which there are three pairs, are then carefully thinned. The surgeon may use a radiofrequency device, surgical laser, or endoscope to remove the excess portion of the turbinates.
Common side effects after this procedure include bleeding or crusting inside the nose, along with dryness. Your nose may feel stuffy or congested for about a week, until it has had the chance to heal. Following surgery, patients find it easier to breathe and sleep. Many also have a reduction in nasal congestionor drainage.
